In preparing for the monumental World Cup qualifying match between Argentina and Brazil tomorrow (which I might be able to watch, thanks Maureen!), Brazilian midfielder and 2007 Golden Ball winner Kaka, has decided to come out and say that he's "a more complete player than Maradona."
Let's stop and ponder that sentence for a second. Sure, Kaka had his heyday back in '07 when he was scoring a million and six goals for AC Milan and everyone was paying attention to him. But then he disappeared. He had a mediocre series of seasons with Milan, and the attention switched back to the likes of Messi, Torres and Ronaldo. I mean, at one point Kaka was considered one of the best players in the world, but I don't even think Messi, who has been called the next Maradona, would dare call himself better. Ronaldo, maybe, but he's an egotistical ass.
Soccer players of today are supposed to worship the ground Maradona walks on (at least I do), not call him out and say "Oh by the way, you actually weren't that good." At least not from someone people seemed to forget about until Real broke the transfer record (subsequently broken by Ronaldo weeks later) to get him on their team. He's got nerve, and I'm pretty sure he's wrong anyway.
Kaka is also pretty confident that Argentina is going to dig it's own grave tomorrow by coming into the game tense. We'll see what happens. I can't lie, I had a lot of respect for Kaka before this statement was released. I'm interested to see if Maradona will react, or maybe he'll be able to let his coaching speak for his skills tomorrow. One can only hope.
