Fabio Cannavaro, defender for Italian club Juventus and formerly of Real Madrid, got slammed by Inter coach Jose Mourinho this week. The story goes that Cannavaro was chatting up Inter player Davide Santon, telling Santon that he should look for a new club if his playing time with Inter does not increase. Cannavaro also told media outlets that Santon's spot on the Italian national team could be jeopardized if he did not receive increased playing time. Mourinho warned Cannavaro to remember his place as a player, not a coach.
Let's clear a few things up: Davide Santon is 18-yrs-old. He's already debuted with the Italian national team in a friendly against Northern Ireland in June of this year, and was named on the squad to play in the Confederations Cup (he never made an appearance due to injury, and seniority of his position went to Gianluca Zambrotta). I think this kid knows what he's doing. He's on a club that has won the Serie A title 5 times in a row, and he came up through the youth league.
Also, Fabio Cannavaro, as I understand it, is not well liked among the Italian crowd, at least the supporters of Juventus. He very publicly left Juventus in 2006 when they were demoted to the B-league of Italian football after being convicted of match-fixing. There was a small faction of Juve supporters who actually protested his transfer when he returned to the club last year!
My point is that Cannavaro is in no place to be giving transfer advice to anyone. I'm sure he's still in hot water with Juve supporters, and I wouldn't trust him to give advice to a teenager who certainly seems to be heading in the right place.
