I've been trying to avoid this post all day. I've scoured the other newspapers I read to get my stories in vein hoping that SOMETHING would show up that would trump this story. But alas, it is to no avail, so it is with a truly heavy heart, that I report this.
Guti's face has been staring at me all day in the form of several pictures on the front page of Marca.com, the online version of the Spanish newspaper. Guti is a midfielder for Real Madrid, and he's decided to come out and say that "Madrid has a better team than Barcelona." This would be a fine, if impossibly incorrect, statement to make, if he hadn't followed it with this little gem: "this is one of the best teams with whom I've ever played, and we're ready to fight for the three titles," referring to La Liga championship, Copa Del Rey, and Champions League titles.
Guti, go home. Honestly, and I can not tell you why, this guy makes me so mad. For someone who only played in 50% of all of the games Real Madrid played last year (Guti stats here, '08-09 Real season here), there is no way he can talk shit about Barcelona like that. Especially since he didn't even start their season-opener against Deportivo, but was brought on as a sub. At the bottom of the article it says that Ronaldo says that Guti is a player of "great quality" which really makes me laugh just because it's Ronaldo. I take everything that boy says with a grain of salt. Now I actually want to see a Real game (did I just say that? Gross) because I want to see what kind of impact Guti makes on the field. I'd say I have a 50-50 chance of catching him in a game, but with Kaka overtaking the midfield now, I'd say it's less than that. We'll see.
Now, I can totally understand having loyalty to your club and all of that, but I don't really think that Guti is the best person to be talking smack about other teams. He's certainly not, in my opinion, the most influential player on the field. I try not to watch Real games, but I never hear about him in the news as being Man of the Match or scoring crazy goals. In fact, last year he scored 3 goals and 7 assists total, all in La Liga (note: one of the assists was during the Champions League).
So Guti, you can have your say now, but we'll see exactly how well your team does.
