CL Group A-D Round 2 Results

Group A
Bordeaux 1-0 Maccabi Haifa
Bordeaux clinched this win relatively late, with an 83rd minute goal by Michael Ciani. Bordeaux is now tied with Bayern Munich in points while Maccabi is still winless.
Juventus 0-0 Bayern Munich
Neither team was able to break through and pull off a win. This is the 2nd tie for Juve, putting them in 3rd place with 2 points. Bayern is currently leading the table with 4 points after defeating Maccabi Haifa last week.

Group B
CSKA Moscow 2-1 Besiktas
Moscow netted two goals (Alan Dzagoev 7, and Milos Krasic 61) before Besiktas' Ekrem Daq responded in the 90th minute. Moscow joins VfL Wolfsburg with 3 points while Besiktas remains winless.
Manchester United 2-1 VfL Wolfsburg
Michael Carrick led United to a late win after Ryan Giggs leveled Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko's 55th minute strike. Carrick scored late, with only 12 minutes before final time. United lead the table with 6 points closely by Wolfsburg.

Group C
AC Milan 1-0 FC Zurich
Wow. I don't really have a reaction for this. AC Milan has been having an absolutely terrible season, and it was epitomized by their loss today. Hannu Tihinen netted his shot within 10 minutes of the starting whistle and AC was never able to counter. AC is still right behind Real Madrid thanks to their win last week, but they clearly need to reassess some things tactically.
Real Madrid 3-0 Olympique Marseille
This was the most heartbreaking game I've seen in a while. Marseille is the most formidable match that this new Madrid has seen since the beginning of the season. Kaka, Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema had no answer to Marseille's impeccable defense and got almost no shots off during the first half (with the exception of a sweet Guti bicycle that went just over the crossbar). None other than CR9 started the heartbreak with a goal 58 minutes in, and the icing on the cake was a red card awarded to Marseille's Souleymane Diawara for a late slide tackle against The Machine in the box. Kaka scored the ensuing penalty kick and Ronaldo added salt to Marseilles' wounds with a second goal just 3 minutes later. Credit has to be given to Marseille's goalie Steve Mandanda, who had some amazing stops of point-blank shots. Real is leading the table while Marseille remains winless despite having a team that is clearly superior to the Spaniards.

Group D
FC Porto 2-0 Atletico Madrid
No surprises here- the Portuguese team defeated Atletico, who have had a horrendous season so far, despite having two amazing strikers (Kun Aguero and Diego Forlan). Two late goals by Radamel Falacao (75) and Rolando (82) clinched the game for Porto, which shows that Atletico at least posed some sort of a fight for 3/4 of the game. Porto is in 2nd place behind Chelsea and Atletico are still winless.
Chelsea 1-0 Apoel Nicosia
Nicolas Anelka (ew) won the game for Chelsea with a goal in the 18th minute and Apoel never responded. Chelsea sit comfortable at the top of the table followed by FC Porto.

CL Group A-D Round 2 Preview

Group A
Bordeaux vs. Maccabi Haifa
Bordeaux tied Juventus in the 1st round while Maccabi failed to top Bayern Munich. I'm not too familiar with either team so I don't want to make predictions.
Juventus vs. Bayern Munich
Juventus has moved to 2nd place in Serie A while Bayern are parked in the middle of the table in the Bundesliga. Bayern will definitely be looking for the win, though, as they have the most points in the group. A win will widen the gap between them and the next in line.

Group B
CSKA Moscow vs. Besiktas
Both went winless last weekend, so a win tomorrow will set them closer to table-leaders Wolfsburg and Manchester United, both of whom have 3 points.
Manchester United vs Wolfsburg
Tied in 1st place after their respective wins last weekend, this game will set a definite leader in the table, unless there's a draw.

Group C
AC MIlan vs. FC Zurich
Zurich lost to Real Madrid last round and AC Milan defeated Marseille. The underdog is Zurich, but hopefully Milan will turn up to win and make it out of the group stages.

Real Madrid vs. Marseille
The Spanish giants are unfortunately undefeated in their league play and CL career, so a win over Marseille is expected, though it would be nice to see the French side knock Madrid down a peg or two. One can only hope.

Group D
FC Porto vs. Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid have been have been performing horribly as of late. They are in the bottom of La Liga standings and could only muster a tie last week. Porto was defeated by Chelsea so Atletico are ahead of them in the standings. A win might regenerate Atletico and help them get themselves together.

Chelsea vs. Apoel Nicosia
Chelsea was stunned this weekend after their 3-1 defeat to Wigan, so they're probably going to come into this game with a little vengeance. Although I'm not a Chelsea fan, I can see them pulling off a win.

CL Group E-H Round 2 Results

Group E
Liverpool 2-0 Fiorentina
Lyon 4-0 Debrecen

Fiorentina striker Steven Jovetic netted two goals for his Italian side against Liverpool today, and the English opponents could never respond. The two are currently tied for 2nd place with 3 points behind leader Lyon, with 6. Speaking of Lyon, 3 goals in the 1st half and 1 within five minutes of the second half were definitely enough to secure three points for them. Debrecen had to answer to their rampage.

Group F
FK Rubin Kazan 1-1 Inter Milan
Barcelona 2-0 Dynamo Kiev

No one would have predicted that Inter Milan and Rubin Kazan would draw today. However, the Italian giants had to come from behind to salvage a point from the match after a goal from Alejandro Dominguez put Kazan ahead in the 11th minute. Luckily 16 minutes later Dejan Stankovic was able to net the equalizer, but nothing more would come from either offensive. Inter sits in 3rd place with only 2 points, right ahead of Rubin Kazan with 1. Barcelona is currently leading the table after strong strikes from Leo Messi and Pedro silenced Dynamo, who had minimal ball possession throughout. Los cules were clearly missing Henry on the front, but Iniesta did well while he was in.

Group G
Sevilla 4-1 Rangers
Unirea Urziceni 1-1 VfB Stuttgart

Four goals in 24 minutes was definitely enough to break the stalemate between Sevilla FC and the Rangers. Nacho Novo saved face for the Rangers, netting one 2 minutes before time, but the Rangers are still in last place in their group, their only point coming from a tie last week. Sevilla are leading the table with 6 points- the max at this point. Stuttgart got a very early start, opening up the scoring 5 minutes in. Unfortunately for them Urziceni responded at the very beginning of the 2nd half. Stuttgart has 2 points so far, Urziceni has one.

Group H
Arsenal 2-0 Olympiakos
AZ Alkmaar 1-1 Standard Liege

Two very late goals allowed Arsenal to walk away victorious, thanks to Robin Van Persie and Andrei Arshavin, scoring in the 78th and 86th minutes respectively. The win keeps Arsenal at the top of the table with 2 wins, followed closely by Olympiakos with 3. There was talk that either Van Persie or whoever assisted him was about a mile offisides, but the ref made no note and the goal counted. AZ Alkmaar and Standard are tied for third place after drawing today, giving each other their first point. Alkmaar seemed to have it all locked up after an early second half goal, but just before extra time Standard Liege struck and leveled, snatching the win from Alkmaar's grasp.

And They're Off!

The season has barely begun, and already there are 5 players from 4 different teams in La Liga who are serious contenders to be named "Pichichi," or the highest goal-scorer in La Liga.

Though they don't have the spot in the standings to show it, Valencia's David Villa is the current leading goal scorer in La Liga. He has scored in 4 consecutive games for Valencia- scoring 2 against Valladolid and Sporting Gijon, and one against Getafe and Atletico Madrid. As I've said before, Villa (with his companion David Silva) desperately need to get out of Valencia for a better club.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo have already set a record at their respective clubs, being the first players to score in every game (so far) of their debut season. Both have provided critical goals for their sides and continue to show that they are clearly worth the investment laid out for them.

Also with 5 goals this season is the always stellar Lionel Messi, although he's played one less game for Barcelona than everyone else in the running, making his goals a bit more powerful than those of his opponents. He scored two goals during Barcelona's 5-2 romp against Atletico Madrid.

This is going to make for an interesting season of goal-scoring as the season continues to heat up.

CL Group E-H Preview

The Champions League group stages recommence tomorrow and Wednesday. Groups E-H play tomorrow, while A-D have games on Wednesday.

Group E
Fiorentina vs. Liverpool
Look for Fernando Torres, hot off his hat-trick on Sunday, to try and secure the 3 points for the Reds. Lyon and Liverpool are at the top of Group E, both securing wins during the first round of group stages.
Lyon vs. Debrecen
Debrecen will have to work hard to clinch the three points that they need to stay in the running for advancement. French-side Lyon is currently in 2nd place Ligue 1, it's country's premier league.

Group F
FK Rubin Kazaz vs. Inter Milan
After the hype surrounding the Barcelona-Inter CL match-up ended in a disappointing stalemate, Inter will definitely look to gain the maximum amount of points from the rest of their games, especially after the reigning Italian champions were knocked out of their top spot in the Serie A standings by a surprise defeat to Sampdoria. Eto'o is probably looking to live up to the hype surrounding his stellar debut season with Inter.
Barcelona vs. Dynamo Kiev
With Dymtro Chygynsky injured for up to 3 weeks and Thierry doubtful due to a thigh injury, Barcelona will have to dig deep to defeat Dynamo, the only team in Group F with three points, defeating FK Rubin Kazan last round. Andres Iniesta is a possible starter, which is quite exciting given he has been eased back into games gently after his injury.

Group G
Rangers vs. Sevilla FC
Sevilla is heading the group currently, followed by Rangers and VfB Stuttgart, who tied each other last time. Sevilla is on a role right now, gathering 12 out of 15 points in 5 games in La Liga, while the Rangers are right behind arch rival Celtic in the Scottish Premier League. The game should be well-matched.
VfB Stuttgart vs. Unirea Urziceni
Unirea is the only team in Group without points, but Stuttgart only has one. Both teams will be vying for maximum points to contend with leader Sevilla.

Group H
Arsenal vs. Olympiakos
Arsenal came back from a quick 2-goal deficit against Standard Liege to win 3-2 in the 81st minute with a goal from Eduardo. Hopefully this game will be a little less nerve-wracking for the Gunners, although Olympiakos is generally a very good team. Both Arsenal and Olympiakos have 3 points in Group H, so this match will determine the leader, except in the case of a tie.
AZ Alkmaar vs. Standard Liege
Both teams are vying for third place behind whoever loses in the Arsenal-Olympiakos game. Neither received any points in their first group stage game, so this game will set the stage for their final two matches.

Saturday Wrap Up

A quick review of other games that happened today:

LIverpool 6-1 Hull City
My favorite striker who refuses to perform when I watch his games, Fernando Torres, stuck true to form today, scoring a hat-trick in 35 minutes (12', 28', 47') to open the scoring against a powerless Hull City. Following him was Steven Gerrard (61'), and finally Ryan Babel, netting two for himself (88, 90'). This is Liverpool's 4th straight win. They're currently sitting comfortably in 3rd place behind Manchester Utd (1st) and Chelsea FC.

Wigan 3-1 Chelsea
This was a big upset for the Blues. They had a 100% win record going into this game, and they also gave Wigan it's first win EVER over a Big Four team. Titus Bramble of Wigan scored first, 16 minutes in, and it took Chelsea until 2 minutes into the 2nd half with a goal from Didier Drogba to level. Then came the death sentence: in the 52nd minute Chelsea goalie Petr Cech was handed a straight red card when he tripped striker Hugo Rodallega in the box. Second-string goalie Henrique Hilario entered the field for Cech and Flourent Malouda came off the field as the man down. Hilario allowed both the ensuing penalty from Rodallega and one more in the 90th from Paul Scharner. Chelsea are now in 2nd place behind Man Utd.

Tottenham 5-0 Burnley
Robbie Keane scored 4 times, the first and then the last three (18', 74', 77', 87'). His rampage was broken up by Jermaine Defoe, who scored in the 33rd minute. Tottenham is currently 4th in the standings.

Manchester Utd 2-0 Stoke City
Veteran Utd. man Ryan Giggs is being dubbed the hero of his game. He came on as a sub in the 57th minute for a lackluster Nani and 5 minutes later handed out an assist to Dimitar Berbatov. which is only his second goal of the season. So much for being worth the money shelled out for him. Utd., as usual, are at the top of the standings.

Atletico Madrid 2-2 Valencia
Atletico Madrid needs to get it together. Last season they were top contenders for the top 4 spots in La Liga, and they've done a complete 180 since then. They're sitting in the relegation zone right now, 3 spots up from last place. They've only accumulated 3 points in 5 games, and have yet to win one. With talent like Kun Aguero, Diego Forlan, and Maxi Rodruigez, this should not be happening. Their trainer needs to go, or rethink his tactics. Kun Aguero scored first in the 7th minute before Pablo leveled for Valencia in the 25th. David Villa (love him!) pulled Valencia ahead two minutes later. A very late strike (90th minute) saved Atletico and salvaged them at least one point from the encounter.

Small Changes Make All the Difference

Sometimes all it takes is one play, one call by the ref, one substitution to change the entire course of a game. Real Madrid and Barcelona, battling it out for the top spot in La Liga, showed us that in fine form today.

Real Madrid played first, taking on Tenerife, enjoying their first season in the Primera league since 2002. They played well, holding Real goalless through the first half.

Manuel Pellegrini made two key changes during halftime, subbing out Esteban Granero for Kaka and Sergio Ramos for Guti. Two minutes later Karim Benzema found the net, his first of the season. He would score again 11 minutes later, followed by Kaka in the 77th minute. The change in the lineup, however subtle, led Real to victory in what would have otherwise been a very close call for Real.

With Barcelona, the effect of a single change was just as profound but a bit more obvious. Barcelona's game today against Malaga was not their best- I would have liked to see them control the ball more, slow down, connect more passes. However, the defense worked quite hard in the beginning 20 minutes and covered for the lacking midfield and strikers.

It seemed like Barcelona might not see a score until Thierry Henry suffered a leg injury in the 29th minute, and was subbed out for Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The effect was immediate. Ibra, who has already developed an almost telepathic connection with Messi, had several shots on goal within minutes of entering the field. He would see his attempts pay off when a gorgeous chip from Messi would lead him into the box and nail the ball into the near post right past the tips of Malaga keeper Gustavo Munua's fingers.

Dymtro Chygrynsky is not on my good side right now- he did a terrible job of marking in the beginning minutes of the game, and his mark got several shot on goal before Chygrynsky tightened up. In the second half Guardiola picked up on this, and subbed him out for Gerard Pique, my new favorite defender behind Dani Alves. Pique was subbed in the 56th minute, and by minute 59 he had a goal. Talk about subtle changes.

Barca had to deal with a lot of dirty playing from Malaga today- Messi was tripped in the box and then had his ankle stepped on by the same player, and he also had his shirt blatantly pulled numerous times. The ref was awful and never once awarded a card to any of the fine Malaga players who committed the crimes. There were also several trips and pushes in the box that should have been penalty kicks for Barca, but the ref was blind to those as well.

That being said, I'm glad my boys got their two goals and didn't give Malaga any points for their dirty tactics.

Barcelona-Malaga Preview

Barcelona takes on Malaga tomorrow, in which Thierry Henry will probably take the position of center-forward, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic is unlikely to start the game. The Swedish superstar sprained his ankle in Barcelona's game on Tuesday and was originally projected to be out for one to two weeks, but has given the go-ahead by team medics to play tomorrow.

Bojan Krkic would normally be the go-to guy to fill a gap in center forward, but alas, he is still injured as well.

This game will be Henry's time to shine and make a big difference in the game. Henry has been relatively quiet so far this season, contributing no goals and minimal action on the left side. Perhaps if he's more centralized he will be able to involve himself more in the plays.

Ibrahimovic has had no problem adjusting to the position, connecting with Xavi and Messi on numerous occasions, so lets hope the Frenchman can produce the same results.

The big question I have is who's going to be the third striker- coach Pep Guardiola has stuck with a 4-3-3 lineup this season, so who he's going to bring in for the 3rd striker is what's most on my mind. Will it be Iniesta, the most obvious choice because he's such a versatile player, being able to play as effective at striker as at midfield? Or will Pedro, a "junior player" (though he's 22 years old) get some playing time? After his performance during preseason, scoring several goals during their American tour, he definitely deserves the time.

Valdes, Pinto, Maxwell, Abidal, Marquez, Puyol, Chygrynsky, Pique, Alves, Xavi, Busquets, Toure, Keita, Iniesta, Pedro, Messi, Ibrahimovic, Henry, and Jeffren are the 19 players on the roster for the game.

Malaga is coming off of three consecutive losses to Deportivo, Racing Santander and Espanyol. As such, Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz is looking to be Barcelona's first loss of the season.

"Barca is not going to win all of their games," said Muniz in an interview.

"We will try to exploit all of our options, many or few," he said of their upcoming game with the Catalan giants.

I wish you all the best in your quest, Sr. Muniz, because you might just need a miracle or something like it to do such a thing.

He Has Returned

Diego Maradona has finally graced Argentina with his presence after an extended vacation in Italy with his girlfriend. The surprise trip was supposedly taken so the Argentine could regroup before his national team's final two WC qualifiers next month (Oct. 10 and 14). He has returned to a country that has mostly turned against him to find the Argentina Football Association trying to help him make key decisions that will help their team qualify for the WC.

Maradona was irate when he heard this, and still refuses to receive help with the team. The AFA is trying to advise him on players to call up, as well as on tactics and whatnot.

"Here I am the one who decides. I listen to everyone, but I make the final decision," he told Sport magazine, about who decides the list of players called up for matches and friendlies- Argentina will be playing Ghana in a friendly in preparation for their games against Peru and Uruguay.

'No one will impose anything on me, or treat me like a player. There is no one else who can call up a player that I've said 'no' to. I take charge of the decisions I make."

This stubbornness is the reason he's getting nowhere with the team. He obviously needs help and guidance when it comes to coaching. No one's taking a swing at his (former) playing abilities, but his coaching is obviously not up to snuff.

I understand that he probably feels that because he is thought of so highly in the soccer world that he may think he deserves this sort of freedom with a team. Or maybe if Argentina pulls a complete 180 and crushes Peru and Uruguay, he wants to be able to say 'I told you so.' But right now when his team is dangerously close to not even getting a play-off game to qualify, the childish behavior is not acceptable.

I say get Sergio Batista out of coaching the U-20 Argentina national team and bring him up to the big leagues. He's already the coach of the Olympic team, and seeing as they WON the 2008 Olympics, it seems like a pretty smart idea. Batista seems to know what he's doing, and he's had a hell of a lot more managerial experience than Maradona. I bet he's more prone to taking advice and help, as well.

Well That Was Fast

Two days ago, Sol Campbell broke his contract with Notts County, a League-Two team in England.

Campbell, 35, has left the club after playing only one game with Notts, which was a defeat to Morecambe FC on September 19. Immediately following the game he approached manager Ian McParland and said he wanted to be released from the club.

The defender played for Arsenal, Tottenham, Portsmouth, and the English national team (not in that order) before signing for Notts County this summer. Many, including Arsenal manager Arsene Wegner, were surprised that the former English international would sign for a League Two team, and it seems that they were not let down.

Sources close to the player cite that Campbell had "a reality check" after the defeat, and that "there has always been concern about his fragile psychological state."

His fragile psychological state? It sounds more like Campbell could not cope with the fact the he could be ending his career in a League Two team.

He just decided that after his team lost his first match that he didn't want to give this team a chance, as selfish as that is. Campbell can't sign with a new team until January, but I'm wondering how marketable this stunt is going to make him. I'm not sure any clubs are going to want to invest in an aging player in a "fragile psychological state" who breaks contracts on a whim.

We'll see come January if he's able to recover from this.

Q&A with Soccernet's Jon Carter

Sports have always been a major part of Jon Carter’s life. When he decided he did not want to pursue them professionally, he started writing as a sports journalist and has worked to develop his skills at several different sports media outlets. Now a major soccer correspondent at ESPN’s Soccernet (www.soccernet.com), Carter says he is living his dream.

I loved watching soccer as a kid and writing about it seemed the natural path for me.”

What follows are some questions and answers Carter gave for an interview with Planet Blacksburg.

PB When did you figure out you wanted to be a sportswriter?

CARTER: I always knew that I would want to do something involving sports, writing and a computer. I loved watching soccer as a kid and writing about it seemed the natural path for me, so from the age of about 15 I did everything I could to try and make that happen.

PB Did you play sports in high school/college?

CARTER: Growing up in the UK, I played rugby and cricket at school, but also enjoyed basketball and tennis too. I went to a school that didn't play soccer, so cricket was my main sport. Like many journalists, I was never good enough at any sport to think about playing professionally but I still enjoy it as a hobby and stil like to play the odd game of 5-a-side.

PB: Where did you work before ESPN? How do you feel those jobs helped you develop as a writer?

CARTER: came straight out of a Masters course in Journalism to work for the Extreme Sports Channel. Primarily doing stuff for their website, it gave me a good chance to see the inner workings of a TV channel and also enhanced my skills in writing and creating pictures and video for the web. I also did a brief stint for the sports section of a magazine called 'Soldier' which is the armed forces mag for the UK. There's nothing like learning on the job, though, and I feel my writing skills really took off when I joined Soccernet.

PB: What has your experience been like working for ESPN?

CARTER: A dream come true. ESPN's passion for sports is something I could identify with and I feel very privileged to be doing something that I consider fun, while getting paid at the same time. I have learnt a lot from working with established soccer journalists such as Phil Ball and Richard Jolly; while the acquisition of cricinfo.com, racinglive.com, and scrum.com have broadened my experience of other sports and the talented writers who work on their sites.

PB: Did you always enjoy writing about soccer, or do you write about other sports as well?

CARTER: Soccer has always been my main passion, but throughout my school years and with work experiences I have covered a vast array of sports from cricket to Taekwondo. The Extreme Sports Channel had me writing about skating, bmx, and winter sports and I still keep an eye on the sports that interest me (which is pretty much everything).

PB: Did you intern at any big media outlets during college?

CARTER: The sports journalism field is exceptionally hard to get into, so I was unable to do any internships. I knew people who had worked for free for a year just to get their foot in the door, and sometimes they would still not get the job. So instead I focused on writing as much as possible during university and took the decision to get a Masters degree to enhance my employment skills afterwards. Sky Sports were kind enough to give me a tour of their offices for a day or so, and I was hired by ESPN soon after.

PB: Do you have a particular team you follow or enjoy covering?

CARTER: Arsenal, although it's hard to say I 'enjoy' covering them sometimes. My first game ever was watching David Rocastle (sadly no longer with us) and Ian Wright play for the reserves in a mach against Aldershot Town. David Seaman was my big hero as a kid, as I had always wanted to be a goalkeeper.

PB: Have you ever had the opportunity to interview any famous soccer players or managers?

CARTER: There's been a few over the past few years, but new Thailand manager and Man Utd. legend Bryan Robson, Argentine her Ossie Ardiles, and Arsenal stalwart Ray Parlour are some of my personal favourites. Nothing will top the moment I met Dutch superstars Dennis Bergkamp and Johan Cruyff though.

PB: Is there anyone you consider to be an influence on your career as a writer?

CARTER: Henry winter, one of the most well-respected journalists in the UK. He writes for the Daily Telegraph mainly, but also has columns in magazines such as Four Four Two. I had the chance to meet him as we were both interviewing former referee Graham Poll a few years ago and he was able to offer me some age advice. I read his work almost every day.

PB: Any advice for aspiring sportswriters or journalists in general?

CARTER: Just write as much as you can. Newspapers, websites, blogs, magazines, anything. Seeing your name in print is the best thing you can do and it will give you a great feeling when it's there in black and white. Anything you can do to build up a portfolio of material to show off your skills is important and don't give up. It's a tough profession to get into, but everyone wants to see passion and if you show how mch you care about the subject you write about then you'll go far.

PB: How do you feel about the English Premier League's rule about keeping at least 8 "homegrown" players on a roster, and do you think other leagues should adopt the same policy?

CARTER: I'm not sure quite how much difference this will make in the long run. None of the current Premier League sides suffer, as they all have at least eight. Also, it's hard to call them "homegrown" as you have someone like Spaniard Cesc Fabregas who qualifies because he signed for Arsenal at 16, and Owen Hargreaves (and English international) who doesn't because his footballing education was completed in Germany. We might see more young foreign players joining at 17, so they can count as having played for the club for three years before they are 21. It won't help English players come through.

PB: In the wake of the controversy surrounding Lionel Messi's performances for Argentina versus FC Barcelona, do you think the success or failure of a team rests with a team, the trainer, or a mixture of both (and along the same lines, do you have a team to win the World Cup)?

CARTER: It certainly is a mixture of both, although the manager is the man whose job is on the line. The players have to take responsibility, but at the end of the day it is the boss who is a key part in making them perform. Teamwork is key, as you can see with the way Barcelona play, and the impact of someone who doesn't know how to bring it in (like Diego Maradona) can upset that balance. You can have the most talented players in the world, but they still need guidance on the pitch. Spain looks comfortable with each other on the bitch and they would be my tip for the World Cup, even if I'll only be covering them from my London base for Soccernet.

Great advice and insight from an experienced sports writer. Again I thank Mr. Carter and hope to be able to speak to him again in the future.

Real Overpowers 10-man Villarreal

Real Madrid defeated a 10-man Villarreal today 2-0 after Javier Gonzalo was ejected after his 2nd yellow card offense in the 35th minute.

The first goal was scored by none other than CR9 who, in what seems like a tradition he's trying to start, scored in the first minute of play.

The second goal, however, did not arrive until the 73rd minute when Kaka put a well-placed penalty kick past the hands of Diego Lopez. By and large that means that Villarreal either played exceptionally well with 10 players to keep Real from scoring save for a penalty kick, or Real was very unlucky.

Since Ronaldo was able to net his first shot on goal, I'm going to say Villarreal really played their hearts out. When you are a player down, playing against a machine like Real Madrid, there is only so much you can do, but I have to applaud Villarreal for such a fete. I wish I could have seen the game to offer better analysis, but alas, I had class.

Now for something really cool. Before yesterday, Barcelona was in 2nd place in the standings by goal difference- now they have drawn ahead of Real because they've scored more goals overall. But the above picture is a screen shot of the standings as of right now, according to espnsoccernet.com. Click on the picture to open it in a new window and get a closer look.

Look at how close the two teams are! If this continues, El Clasico in December is going to be one of the most unforgettable games in history.

The Ibrahimovic and Messi Show

Barcelona continued on their reign of terror today, tearing apart Racing Santander 4-1 at Racing's home stadium.

Los cules scored three times in seven minutes during the first half, then once again in the second before a response from Racing 18 minutes before full time.

The lineup for the teams was as such
Barcelona
Goalie: Victor Valdes
Defenders: Abidal, Puyol, Pique (Rafa Marquez 57), Dani Alves
Midfielders: Keita, Busquets, Xavi
Strikers: Henry, Messi (Iniesta 64) Ibrahimovic (Pedro 53)

Racing
Goalie: Tono
Defenders: Pinillos, Henrique, Morris, Sepsi
Midfielders: Arana, Diop (Colsa 57), Lacen, Serrano
Strikers: Geijo (Xisco 57), Munitis (Luis Garcia 70)

Goals
1-0: Ibrahimovic, min 20
2-0: Messi, min 24
3-0: Pique, min 27
4-0: Messi, min 63
4-1: Serrano, min 72

All in all, Barcelona played beautifully. They worked the ball around the field, rarely losing it to Racing. In fact, halfway through the first half the breakdown of possession was Barcelona 70%, Racing 30%. They were calm, cool, and collected throughout. Ibrahimovic's goal was totally the creation of Messi, who played the ball across perfectly so that the Swedish giant could head it in back-post. Both Messi and Ibrahimovic had amazing games, being active in almost every one of Barcelona's goals.

Goal number two was a combination of beautiful and sheer skill on Messi's part. A series of passes inside the 18-yd-box between Messi, Ibra, and Xavi set the Argentinian up for a quick fake to the left and then a low strike to the far post out of the reach of Tono. Watching in on my computer I had no idea how he snuck the ball between the two defenders, but he's skilled enough that he made it happen. The goal was an exhibition of teamwork and individual skill all in one.

Pique's goal came from a very well-place back pass from Ibra, who was facing pressure in the box. Pique, who had just entered the field after having his head bandaged (he was tripped and the cleat of a player for Racing clipped him in the back of the head, resulting in a small gash that had to be treated) neatly settled the back pass and put it in the back of the net for number three.

Messi's second goal of the night showcased what he does best: cutting in from the right and ripping off a shot with his left foot. Messi received the ball and cut almost halfway across the 18, weaving through several players before firing a shot, a beautiful upper left corner shot.

The response from Racing was, in my opinion, Barcelona getting sloppy. After the fourth goal and the replacement of Ibra and Messi, Racing started getting more shots on goal, possessing the ball a bit more. Serrano was able to nutmeg Marquez right before his goal, and the pressure on him generally wasn't that hard, even in Barca's defensive third. Thankfully the goal was a small jolt for them, and Barcelona conceded no more goals.

Ibrahimovic will be out for one to two weeks with a sprained ankle he sustained during the first half of the game, and Eric Abidal continues to be my least favorite player on the team. He gave Racing no less than THREE direct kicks in Barcelona's defensive third in the first half alone. He is unnecessarily physical and obviously stupid since he's fouling players in a dangerous area of the field.

Guardiola Seeks Perfection in Mid-Week Matchup

Barcelona takes on Racing Santander today at 4 EST. You can stream it on ESPN360.com or watch it on ESPN2.

Guardiola is looking for his boys to up their quality of play after their 5-2 thrashing of Getafe. The trainer is looking for more ball control and a slower pace.

I've come to realize that the website that gives me the lineup for the game is always wrong, so I'm going to give my projected lineup, or ideally who I'd like to see out on the field when the whistle blows.

Goalie: Victor Valdes
Defenders: Dani Alves, Pique, Puyol, Rafa Marquez
Midfield: Keita, Xavi, Iniesta
Strikers: Messi, Ibrahimovic, Henry

Racing is squarely in the middle of the standings in 9th place with 4 points.

No Luck for Madrid's "Van Gol"

It seems that just as one of Barcelona's chronically injured players is getting back into the game, Real Madrid's is being given more time on the sidelines.

Ruud Van "Van Gol" Nistelrooy of Real Madrid will be out of action for five to six weeks minimum after he suffered a torn muscle in his right leg during Real Madrid's blowout against Xerez.

The worst part is, the game against Xerez was the first the striker had played in FIVE MONTHS. He was coming of another injury he sustained last season.

Speedy recovery, Ruud. Even if you do play for Real Madrid.

Extra note: Gabi Milito, the chronically injured Barcelona defender has started practicing with a ball. No word yet on whether he's practicing with the team.

Classy People Staying Classy

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry (he still holds the record for most goals scored for the club ever) has lashed out at former teammate Emmanuel Adebayor for his actions against Arsenal fans during their match up with Manchester City last weekend.

Henry said that Adebayor lacks class, and that that was thrown into light with Adebayor's totally unnecessary goal celebration, for which he is facing an improper conduct charge.

In keeping with classy players, Everton striker El-Hadji Diouf is being investigated by police after a ball boy alleged that Diouf made a racist remark toward the boy after he failed to throw the striker the ball fast enough during the game.

The Mercyside Police would only release this statement: "We are looking into an allegation that a 28-yr-old man used racist language at the Everton match today."

Really? Making racist remarks at a child? You know, Cristiano Ronaldo yelled at a young ball boy last summer during the EuroCup and I don't think I've ever hated him more. I would be so ashamed of myself if I ever went off like that at a kid I didn't know.

The English Premier League is a breeding ground for classy players.

Nail-Biters and Blow Outs

There was nothing in between this weekend: the games either made you want to pull your hair out in suspense or sit back and relax as one team or another was run into the ground.

Blow Outs
Arsenal 4-0 Wigan Athletic
Thomas Vermaelen(25, 49), Emmanuel Eboue (59), and Cesc Fabregas (90) all aided the Gunners in their thrashing of Wigan, putting them in 7th place behind a 3-way tie for 4th place between Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Manchester City.
Real Madrid 5-0 Xerez
It almost looked like Real Madrid was going to secure the win with only one goal under their belt (Ronaldo, 1) but then in the span of seven minutes the Spanish giants netted three goals, scored by Ronaldo (75), Guti (78), and Karim Benzema (82) before Ruud Van Nistelrooy sealed the deal in the 89th minute. They are now tied with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for first place.
Barcelona 5-2 Atletico Madrid
A score by Ibrahimovic in the first minute sealed the deal for Barcelona and set the tone for the rest of the game. They were up 4-0 by halftime (Messi 16, Dani Alves 30, Seydou Keita 41). Atletico made an attempted comeback when Kun Aguero (45) and Diego Forlan (84) got a goal a piece, but in the 90th minute Messi put a stop to that, netting his second of the game. The Catalan superteam is in the three- way tie for 1st place with Real and Atletico.

Nail Biters
Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City
Michael Owen was dubbed the hero of this game, allowing United to scrape by with a win in the same minute that Craig Bellamy of City leveled with the former European champions. It was literally a game of seesaw throughout. Wayne Rooney opened the scoring early in the 2nd minute before Gareth Barry leveled in the 16th. In the 2nd half Darren Fletcher hit back twice (49, 80) and was twice answered by City's Craig Bellamy (52, 90). Owen, as previously stated, was the saving grace. He entered as a sub for Dimitar Berbatov in the 78th minute, who still isn't quite living up to expectations.
Liverpool 3-2 West Ham United
As usual, Fernando Torres scores two goals when I'm not watching the game! The Spanish international opened the scoring in the 20th minute, which was quickly answered by a penalty kick by Alessandro Diamanti of West Ham in min. 29. Dirk Kuyt pulled the Reds ahead, but three minutes later the score was again leveled by West Ham's Carlton Cole. After 30 minutes of tense play Torres struck again in the 75th minute. Liverpool was able to hold the lead for the remainder of the game.
