Bitter Berbatov Takes a Strike at Ronaldo

Sorry for the lack of posts today, guys. I actually had to do work in class today so I fell behind. However, I'm going to make up for it with the gem I found on the front page of Sport.es today.

Dimitar Berbatov, Bulgarian striker for Man U, actually stated, in an interview with British newspaper "News of the World," that Wayne Rooney (Wayne Rooney??) is a better player than....wait for it...Cristiano. Ronaldo.

I'll let the laughter subside for a moment. Ok. Now, I'm not trying to bash Rooney. This post is a strike at Berbatov more than anyone else. I totally understand that Rooney is a big contributor for United's success. But better than Ronaldo? Even I don't hate Ronaldo enough to make a statement like that.

Ronaldo scored 120 goals in all competitions in his 6 years with Man U. Rooney scored 94 in 5. He'll need 26 to catch up with Ronaldo. He has 5 so far this season, so I guess it's down to 21. (Rooney stats here, Berbatov's here, Ronaldo's here)

The biggest laugh I get out of this is that it's coming from Dimitar Berbatov. Man U made a huge deal over signing him from Tottenham in 2008. He scored a measly 14 goals his debut season, and the fans were not happy about it, since United shelled out $44.5 million dollars for him. And the fact that United fans were still in the euphoria surrounding their '08 CL win and Ronaldo's 42-goal season, his less-than-stellar performance did not sit well.

So I can see why he would be quite bitter at one of the best strikers in the world (that really hurt to say but unfortunately it's true) for stealing his thunder his first year at one of the most powerful clubs in soccer. I can understand why he would want to take a few shots at the guy, but come on.

This is like Kaka saying he's a more complete player than Maradona. There's just no way one can make such a comparison.
