Iker Casillas has decided to blame his goalkeeping problems on the ball that Adidas has engineered for the upcoming Champions League competition. Now, it could just be me, but does it seem like this happens a lot? I feel like I've heard goalkeepers slam the ball that is used in these tournaments every year. Casillas was quoted in an interview with As Magazine, saying, "How they make the balls makes things difficult these days, particularly the one for the Champions League."
Maybe there really is a problem with the ball UEFA uses for the CL. Maybe it really does make things difficult for goalkeepers. Or maybe Casillas needs a way to justify his 4-1 defeat to Liverpool in the CL last year. Because I never heard Pepe Reina or Edwin van der Sar complaining about the mechanics of the ball. I think Casillas simply needed something to blame for their less than stellar '08-09 season. He even has something to say about the balls used for the regular season, from the same interview.
"The ball used in the league is a but better, it can do strange things but not many. The other one is a complete disaster." Personally, I think we're hearing a little bit of anger at his humiliating 6-2 defeat from Barcelona, as well as a string of defeats during last season. But I'm not one to judge, because I don't know anything about the ball. All I know is I didn't hear van der Sar say anything about it after his defeat, nor Pepe Reina when he was bettered by Petr Cech last season. So maybe Casillas should find a better reason to complain, like his defense.
