FIFPro, a representative organization of professional players, are publicly denouncing the contract Lionel Messi recently signed with Barcelona, extending his time with the club until 2016.
According to FIFPro, a contract committing a player to a team can only bind the player to the club for 1-5 years- Messi's keeps his at Barcelona for another 6. FIFPro is also contesting the buy-out clause for the player, which is now 250 million euros according to his new contract.
No word yet on whether or not their grievances have been heard.
I understand that 6 years is a long time to sign a player, but I also think that the wants of the player should be considered. Messi understands what he's getting into. He's the highest-paid player on the team and he has the highest buy-out clause. He's been with Barcelona for 10 years, and he has a loyalty to the club. Even if FIFA makes Barcelona rewrite his contract so that he's only there for 5 years, next season he'll just sign on for another 5. The boy will be there until the day he retires, mark my words.
